Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the more common questions that are asked that may provide answers to some of your questions…

Do I need to join DOT Academy to get access to the website content?
Yes you do. DOT Academy is a Private Membership Site. Being a subscription-based private club, a membership is required to gain access to website content, social get-togethers, events and classes. We do offer one-month free as standard when you sign-up, so you can see if you like what we do and of course, you can cancel at anytime.
Is it cheaper to opt for Standard or Free membership?
There are many benefits to joining DOT Academy including financial, it all depends on what you are looking for.If you just want to get an idea what DOT Academy is all about first, opting for the Free membership level may be preferable to you but classes, meet-ups and consultations are charged at full rate. While choosing a paid membership level gives you both full access to the website content and discounted rates across the board. For example: If you were to attend an obedience class each week, take part in 3 dogs walks and one pub talk get together, then what you would pay would be around 50% less than a free member, by opting for a Standard membership – that’s not to mention discounted consultations and having access to all the great content on our website!
How does the Academy work?
DOT Academy has been designed to operate similar to a school, in as much as there are different levels of classes for your dogs level of obedience. We recognise that all dogs and owners progress at different rates, so it can be frustrating having a set number of weeks for an obedience class and not only expecting to have achieved a certain level of training and obedience in that time, but also you can be left wondering how to progress from where the obedience class left off. That’s where DOT Academy comes in.With us, you are able to work with your dog to progress through from beginner to advanced levels at your own pace, graduating from one class to the next once you and your dog has reached the level of obedience required for entry to the next class. What’s more, with social activities and competitions there’s always something going on, so you will never be wondering what to do next! With us, you are able to work with your dog to progress through from beginner to advanced levels at your own pace, graduating from one class to the next once you and your dog has reached the level of obedience required for entry to the next class. What’s more, with social activities and competitions there’s always something going on, so you will never be wondering what to do next!
My Dog is aggressive, can I still join?
It depends. A lot of the time people think that their dog is aggressive as it barks and lunges for other dogs and sometimes people. It is possible that your dog is reactive. If your dog is dangerous and it has bitten another dog or person to such an extent that it was necessary for veterinary or medical treatment due to extensive injury of the other dog or person, then it is highly unlikely that you will be accepted in to the Academy.
My dog is 3 years old, is it too late to train her?
There is no limit on age to train a dog and they are able to learn new things at any age. It is worth being aware however, that older behaviours and habits that have been ‘rehearsed’ for years, may take a while to change.
Do you have your own premises?
Due to offering functional training, we train at a variety of locations both in and outdoors. Although we do not currently have our own premises, it is typical that our base obedience training classes are held at the same location and usually indoors to keep things familiar for the dogs in the early stages – although this can change.
Will my membership go up?
As long as you remain a paid member of the club your monthly membership subscription will be locked-in and will never increase. However, should you choose to cancel your membership and rejoin at a later date, then your membership subscription will be charged at the current rate.
